Put in RAM before, but never changed out a fan. Late 2012 Mac Mini i7, grinding noise, so I used the Google. Thirty bucks later ($10 fan + $20 tool kit) the new fan seems to be working. Anybody know what the max safe speed for this is? Using SMC fan control.

Saved about 800 bucks, I think.

Probably in the neighborhood of 6000 RPM. I also use SMC fan control and that was the max speed on my 2008 MacBook Pro and my 2015 Mac Mini.

I lost fan control somehow when I changed a hard drive. That was years ago. A quiet iMac became a whirring wind tunnel.

I have used the google and Ebay to fix an iPad before. Satisfying when it works, isn’t it?

I believe this to be the correct answer.

OE drives have temp sensors and the fan freaks out when you change one. I use Macs Fan Control on every Mac whether I’m using OSX or Windows.

Thanks for that ... I want to keep this little box for at least another year.

Yeah - I’d have to have that prying tool, which I now have (came w/ the kit) but we’ve had no problem w/ the 3 iPads we have. And yes, it’s silly that 2 people have 3 iPads. But here we are.

I figured I messed up the temp sensor that was taped to the drive. I tried to use fan control software, but it didn’t work. Never figured out what I did wrong.

Planned obsolescence, a first world problem to be sure.

I’m going on 2 years past 4 years of age, so it’s all gravy from here. Last Mini lasted 4 years almost to the day.

I see no problem with having more iPads then people. (My judgement may not be the best because I am an Apple hoarder with 5 Macs running 10.10 or newer in a house of 4 people...) iPads are shockingly reliable. Our Air is well over 3 years old, abused for for multiple hours a day by my 5 and 8 years olds and still works fine after several drops and spills I was sure would kill it. The Air 2 still feels new. I’m thinking of getting another with 128 GB just because we like to load them up with movies for road trips.

Got a big 256GB about a year ago - was supposed to be my machine, but shit happens ... Also very reliable and able to stream anything.

Today I tore apart a late-2012 27" iMac to upgrade its failing hard drive with a brand spankin’ new Samsung 860 Evo SSD.

I hate industrial adhesive. With a passion.

Felt very accomplished after successfully not breaking anything though.
